Well I hate to say it but summer is over, we will be spending alot of time inside our homes. With that said it's time to focus on our heating systems as they are usually forgotten or ignored but, expected to work when we need them. First and foremost all heating systems should be inspected annually by a licensed heating contractor to ensure they are in SAFE working order. However there are a few items you, the homeowner can do to avoid nuisance costly service calls.

The first and most important is to ensure your furnace filters are changed monthly. Replace them with a quality pleated type filter. Purchase them in bulk so they are there when you need them.

During the heating season, check the outside venting system to ensure the pipes are clear of ice and snow. This is for mid or high efficiency equipment.

Ensure you have working quality carbon monoxide detectors in the home. They should be placed near or in bedrooms and should be 5 years or newer. If in doubt of their age, throw them out and purchace new ones! You and your families safety are at stake!

If at any time a carbon monixide detector goes into alarm, gather your familly and pets and remove yourselves from the home immediately! Call the fire department from a neighbours house. Do not return home untill the fire department gives you the green light.
